Hey Kids -
Summer’s here, and it’s time to get started on your
Reading Challenge! Why? Because you’re cool, because reading
is fun, and because you
have a chance to win a trip to the 2008 Pepsi MLS All-Star game
or a session at The David Beckham Academy!
Browse the reading lists and choose a book that you’d like
to read. You can start the reading challenge anytime to get a
jump on your first month’s reading goal, but make sure to
log back on at the beginning of June, July, and August to print
a reading log. Each month’s log is different, and you need
to complete all three to qualify for a chance to win a session
at The David Beckham Academy!

The
local library should be the first stop on your summer reading
adventure. Libraries have books on all sorts of topics, so the
biggest challenge you’ll have is deciding
which book to read first. If you need help finding books or you
aren’t sure how to use the library, ask the librarian for
help. The librarian will offer tips and suggestions to get you
started!

- How do
I find books in the library?
- Is there
a new author that I might be interested in reading?
- I really
liked the Harry Potter books. Can you recommend other books
like them?
- How many
books can I check out at once?
- Does
the library have a summer reading program or a book club?
- What is
the most checked out book of all time?

can I keep the books that I check out?
- Do you
have any book clubs for kids my age?
- How many
books does the library have?
- How can
I reserve a book if it is already checked out?
Although
you can read anywhere, you may find out that some places are better
for reading than others. If so, the suggestions below might help
you create a good reading space this summer.
How
to Create a Good Reading Space
- Find a
quiet place. Turn off the TV or close your bedroom door.
- Find a
comfortable chair, some fluffy pillows, or a thick blanket.
- Sit near
a window or a lamp.
- Make a
library of your favorite books, and keep them in your reading
space.
- Ask your
parents if you can have friends over to talk about the books
that you’re reading.
Read...
- On
your front porch!
In a hammock in your backyard!
- In the
car, on your vacation, or even just going
to the store!
- Lying
in the grass!
- Curled
up on the couch!
- By
the pool (but remember your sunscreen)!
- At
your favorite coffee shop!
- In
a comfy chair!
- During
rainy days!
- In
a tree house!
